Celebrating Earth Day, Earth Month and Beyond: CPA’s Year-Round Sustainability Efforts

CPA Happenings

Every April, Clean Power Alliance (CPA) celebrates Earth Day and Earth Month by partnering with communities across Southern California to promote sustainability, support local events and raise awareness about our collective efforts to make the world greener and more energy efficient.

While Earth Month is a time of celebration, CPA’s environmental efforts extend far beyond April. We are committed to impactful, year-round action—developing programs and services that help residents and businesses conserve energy and save money, advancing renewable energy projects that strengthen grid resiliency, and training the local workforce for clean energy careers.

CPA is proud to be ranked the number one green power provider in the United States by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Two-thirds of our customers are served by 100% Green Power, and our energy portfolio is comprised of 75% renewable sources—avoiding over four billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually, equal to removing over one million gas-powered cars from the road.

To meet rising demand for reliable clean energy, we have signed contracts for 769 megawatts (MW) of new battery storage capacity across six projects. These battery storage facilities allow CPA to capture excess energy when renewable sources are plentiful, and prices are low and deploy that energy to customers when prices and usage are higher.

We’re also investing in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and programs that benefit customers. Our recently launched EV Smart Charge program helps customers charge vehicles during off-peak times to save energy and money. Through the CALeVIP program, we’ve invested $1.53 million to grow publicly available EV charging in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

Our Community Benefits Grant, awarded $325,000 to local nonprofits advancing clean energy goals, energy equity, and environmental education. Grantees have applied funding to climate change and sustainability advocacy efforts, energy and water conservation programs, and student-focused green initiatives —benefitting 70 Title 1 schools and 140 classrooms with programs like LA River nature field trips.

CPA increased its program budget by $13 million to develop new programs that provide customers with tools for energy conservation and cost savings. This includes our new Community Solar program, which provides qualifying customers with 100% locally generated renewable energy and a 20% discount on their monthly electric bill.

CPA’s ongoing commitment to sustainability is evident in our 2024 financial strategy, including three prepay green bonds totaling $3.97 billion, generating $45.3 million in annual savings to keep renewable energy costs stable. With 48 MW in renewable energy contracts, we remain a leading green power purchaser in the state.

Our Energy Team service helps customers with everything from electrical upgrade assessments to providing information on ways to access available rebates for homes and small businesses, like the Sun Storage Rebate program, which provides up to $750 (plus $250 more for income-qualified customers) for installing home solar battery storage.
