CPA will be re-launching our Reach Code Program this summer to help local communities reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and meet climate reduction goals that help make Southern California greener and more sustainable.
The program provides financial and technical support to municipalities served by CPA to develop and adopt new construction and building reach codes. These codes outline decarbonization options and guidelines that encourage the installation of clean electric appliances, and measures for electric readiness and energy efficiency.
This includes transitioning buildings to clean electricity, improving energy efficiency, installing battery systems and solar, along with electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
Every three years, cities and counties across the state can adopt local reach codes in line with the new Building Standards Code or Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations. Cities and counties may adopt building codes more advanced than those required by the state, which are known as reach codes.
CPA has collaborated with local jurisdictions to pass ordinances that incentivize greater decarbonization efforts for commercial buildings. The statewide California Energy Codes and Standards team recently released a special edition newsletter outlining reach code options.
Member agencies may apply for supplemental financial awards ranging from $2,500 – $25,000 designed to help cover the staff time needed to participate. An informational webinar is being planned and will be announced soon.
