New Year, New Green Energy: CPA Adds Two Geothermal Facilities to Energy Mix
On January 1, 2022, the Heber and Geysers geothermal facilities, located in Sonoma and Lake Counties and Imperial County, California, began providing clean energy to Clean Power Alliance customers throughout Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
Geothermal power is a near zero emissions renewable source created by heat inside the Earth’s crust. The addition of 14 MW of geothermal power to CPA’s energy portfolio helps us to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuel based sources while supplying enough energy to power 52,000 homes for one year and reduce the amount of gasoline consumed by 10,000,000 gallons.
Geothermal energy also helps increase overall energy reliability for our three million southern California customers as it provides renewable electricity 24 hours a day.
As part of the Heber Complex in Imperial County, California, Heber South launched as a 14 MW facility in April 2008. The Geysers power plants, located in Sonoma and Lake Counties, have been generating electricity for Californians since 1960. CPA has contracted for 50 MW of capacity from the Geysers complex.
Founded in 2017, Clean Power Alliance is the locally operated electricity provider for 30 cities across Los Angeles County and Ventura County, as well as the unincorporated areas of both counties. CPA is the fifth largest electricity provider in California and the single largest provider of 100% renewable energy to customers in the nation, serving approximately three million customers via one million customer accounts, providing clean renewable energy at competitive rates.
