The Geysers geothermal power complex recently achieved commercial operation for a new power purchase agreement that provides 18 megawatts (MW) of electrical generation to CPA customers in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
The new agreement represents CPA’s second of three operational contracts with The Geysers, with the third coming online in June 2027. The addition of 18 MW provides enough renewable energy to power to nearly 25,000 homes in Southern California, reinforcing our commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
The Geysers is the world’s largest geothermal power complex and for more than five decades has been transforming the Earth’s natural heat into reliable, carbon-free energy for California communities.
The geothermal field stretches across 45 square miles in Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino counties and includes 13 geothermal power plants capable of generating up to 900 MW of electricity.
Geothermal energy begins deep underground, where naturally occurring reservoirs of hot water and steam are tapped through production wells. The steam is brought to the surface and used to turn turbines connected to electric generators, producing clean electricity without burning fossil fuels. Afterward, the cooled water is returned to the geothermal reservoir, where it can be reheated naturally and reused, creating a sustainable cycle of renewable energy production.
Unlike many renewable resources that depend on weather conditions, geothermal energy is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
