CPA Invests $250k to Fund Skills Training and Grow College Scholarships

Community Commitment

CPA is excited to announce that our Board of Directors approved new funding for the Voyager Scholarship. The $105,000 in funds will support 105 scholarships for renewable energy students attending seven colleges throughout Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

The funding is equitably distributed to Antelope Valley College, Compton College, East Los Angeles College, Rio Hondo College, Ventura College, Oxnard College, and Moorpark College.

The seven schools were chosen due to the range of sustainability focused programs offered to students, the high rate of completion within the programs, and their geographic location in our Southern California service area. The Board directed staff to research funding students at additional community colleges in the region as well.

The Voyager Scholarship was established in May 2019 by CPA’s Board of Directors, with an initial grant of $150,000 to support students that were pursuing renewable energy-driven career pathways such as electric vehicles and advanced transportation technology, energy and environmental science, and alternative energy.

Makayla Byerly, a student at Moorpark College and a Voyager Scholarship recipient, believes the scholarship was essential to reducing her financial burden and allowing her to focus on preparing for a green future.

“I will be using the scholarship award toward my Environmental Science and Resource Management bachelor’s degree at CSUCI,” said Byerly. “Not having to worry about how to pay for my tuition this fall semester will allow me to focus more of my energy on my classes.”

CPA staff continue to work with all the selected colleges to ensure scholarship funds will be provided to future students pursuing renewable energy career paths, while additionally supporting local workforce development programs that provide students with alternative paths to the green careers of the future.
